FAQs

I'm not sure if what I experienced counts as "trauma." How do I know if trauma therapy is right for me?

Trauma isn't just about major events - it's about how experiences affected your nervous system and sense of safety. If you find yourself overreacting to situations, feeling disconnected from others, struggling with anxiety or depression, or using substances or behaviors to cope, trauma-informed therapy can help, regardless of whether you can point to a specific traumatic event.

I'm successful in my career but still feel broken inside. How can trauma therapy help?

Many high-achieving men use professional success to mask internal struggles. Trauma can create a split between our public and private selves. We'll work to integrate these parts of you, helping you feel as confident and capable internally as you appear externally, without needing constant achievement to feel worthy.

What if talking about the past makes things worse?

We will not explore past experiences until you feel strong enough and comfortable with me. As we carefully identify and explore what you’ve experienced, we will circle back to managing your emotional safety as needed. You can read a little more about my approach to trauma work in this blog post.

How is trauma therapy different from regular therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy recognizes that many of our struggles aren't character flaws or things we need to "think our way out of" - they're nervous system responses to past experiences. We work with your body's wisdom, help you understand your triggers, and develop practical tools for regulation rather than just talking about problems.

I’ve been managing my symptoms for years. Why should I address this now?

Managing symptoms takes enormous energy and keeps you from living fully. While you may have developed effective coping strategies, healing trauma allows you to reclaim that energy for what matters most to you. Many clients find that addressing trauma improves not just their mental health, but their physical health, relationships, and overall life satisfaction.

How do I know if you understand what I'm going through as a man?

I understand the unique ways trauma shows up for men - the pressure to be strong, the disconnection from emotions, the tendency to externalize pain through anger or substances. We suffer in silence. Having walked this path myself, I know how hard it can be to be vulnerable and ask for help. I create a space where your experience as a man is understood and honored.

I also see clients at the Men’s Therapy Centre, which treats male survivors of trauma.
